The Kapatid sports channel is the last to make the jump.
On Monday, January 22, free-to-air sports channel One Sports greeted viewers with a slightly altered look.
This, as it finally made the transition to 16:9 widescreen broadcasts after years of airing in the now-obsolete 4:3 aspect ratio.
One Sports, which is owned by Mediaquest Holdings, Inc. subsidiary Nation Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), is the last of the company’s television channels to make the adjustment.
Its sister free-to-air channel TV5 moved to such aspect ratio for the entirety of its broadcast line-up on April 16, 2023.
That happened weeks after it launched a dedicated high-definition simultaneous feed on Cignal TV on April 1 that year.
Speaking of Cignal, the Kapatid network’s suite of exclusive channels on the platform, including One Sports’ offshoot One Sports+ and another free-to-air news channel One PH, have all been in widescreen broadcasts since their respective launch days.
This would mean more details for sports programming broadcast on the channel, including the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Premier Volleyball League (PVL), University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), and the National Basketball Association (NBA).
While One Sports has moved away from 4:3 for the new format, it has yet to launch a dedicated HD feed like TV5.
One Sports airs on free TV channel 41 in Metro Manila, and channel 29 in Cebu and Davao, among other places.
