Singapore celebrates 58th National Day

Singapore is celebrating its nation’s birthday today.

Today, August 9, Singapore is marking the 58th anniversary of its independence, which happened on this day in 1965 after it was formally removed by Malaysia from the federation.

To commemorate the day, the island city-state will hold a National Day Parade at the historic Padang field in front of its former City Hall, which is now the Singapore National Gallery.

With the overarching theme ‘Onward as One,’ the parade’s main show will have the title “Building Our Shared Future As One,” and will begin at 5:55 pm.

According to organizers, it will join 43 artists and more than 2,000 performers, along with films highlighting lives of Singaporeans.

Aside from the show, there will also be a display of defense machineries and personnel, as well as an aerial show and flypast by the Singapore Air Force.

The Red Lions, another NDP staple, will also be doing their traditional parachuting exercise.

Meanwhile, there will also be celebrations in several “heartland” points across the island, specifically in Tampines, Bedok, Toa Payoh, Woodlands, and Jurong West.

Another tradition for each National Day is the annual National Day song. This year, the official theme song is “Shine Your Light,” which was sang by several local musicians in Singapore.
