EJ Obiena sets record, bags gold medal at an Asian athletics meet

Our national athlete has made a record.

Philippines’ national pole vaulter EJ Obiena yielded a gold medal after setting a new competition record at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand.

He did this by clearing 5.91 m, which also broke his personal record of 5.71 m that he set in 2019.

Obiena is also the first Filipino to earn a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics after meeting qualification at the 2023 Bauhaus-Galan competition in Sweden a few weeks back.

The 2024 games will also mark his second time participating in the Olympiad, after previously competing in the 2020 Tokyo games, which happened in July 2021.
