ABS-CBN closes Sgt. Esguerra gate for transmitter dismantling; main building to remain operational

It will remain standing in the next few months.

It will remain standing in the next few months.

Contrary to earlier reports, ABS-CBN’s main building in Quezon City will continue to serve audiences until 2027.

That is according to a post made by DZMM anchor Zandro Ochona on X (formerly Twitter), where he answered a query regarding where programs will be produced once the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Centre has been closed for good.

The said building is where the newsroom and production studios of ABS-CBN News (including ANC) and radio booth of DZMM are located, with the adjacent Dolphy Theater and entertainment programs like It’s Showtime also connected to it.

As per Ochona, the network will still utilize the main building, including the DZMM booth until next year. Instead, the closure that was first reported only pertains to the gate along Sgt. Esguerra Ave. (also known as the Esguerra gate), which will be affected by the dismantling of the equally iconic Millennium Transmitter.

We’re still using the main building until next year. DZMM booth will still be there until next year. Nagrerouting lang as the tower will be dismantled first. Sinara lang yung Esguerra gate,” he said.

ABS-CBN reporter Lyza Aquino also said in another social media post that the news teams will be shifting over to another gate within the compound as part of the changes.

Other Kapamilya reporters also shared their final snapshots and clips in front of the Esguerra gate, which provides direct access to the iconic lobby bearing the ABS-CBN logo from the 1980s.

Earlier in the week, it was first reported that the entire building will be closed for good after actress Carmi Martin made remarks on her account regarding the supposed closure of the landmark.

Calling ABS-CBN as her mother studio, Carmi shared in the video that she made her return to acting right in the same building in the ’80s, coinciding with the return of the network after the Martial Law and People Power Revolution.

Napakarami kong memories dito dahil pagkabalik ng ABS-CBN, bumalik din ako sa pag-aartista ko,” said the award-winning actress. “And now, guesting for Oh My Gan to promote Sigabo, just to find out na next week pala ay isasara na ‘to at mag-i-start na mag-demolish soon.”

It was back in 2025 when ABS-CBN sold the 30,000 square meter portion of its Quezon City compound to Ayala Land, Inc., which include both the historic main building and Millennium Transmitter.

The turnover of the space was initially expected to be completed by December 2026, with ABS-CBN reportedly vacating the studios at the Broadcasting Center last March.

However, progress has largely been slow since, with Ayala bosses confirming earlier in the year that they still have no concrete plans in the foreseeable future regarding the acquired property.

But just months after the sale, in July 2025, a ceremonial switch-off of the tower that had beamed the Kapamilya network’s signals from 1969 to 1972 and again from 1986 to 2020 was conducted to bookend the storied chapter of ABS-CBN as a terrestrial broadcaster and its move into the future as a content content production powerhouse.

ABS-CBN previously disclosed that it will consolidate its operations in the remaining 1.4 hectare of the property which includes the adjacent ELJ Communications Center (ELJCC) that will continue to serve as the company’s main headquarters.

In fact, the network’s main address has since been updated to the ELJCC in their official business filings.

Meanwhile, when the Broadcasting Centre opened in 1968, the road right in front of it was then-called as the Bohol Avenue—which is a road naming convention in the area with nearby streets being called Samar Avenue and Panay Avenue.

It would later be changed to its current name after the road itself became Sgt. Esguerra Avenue, named after police staff sergeant Eduardo Esguerra, who died in the middle of a coup in that happened in August 1987.

During which, rebel forces against the administration of President Corazon Aquino launched an attack on the Broadcasting Centre, which was shared between the ABS-CBN and the government-run station PTV-4 at that time.
