A shake-up is on the way for two Kapatid news programs.
On Friday, July 31, an era will end as the late-night TV5 newscast Frontline Tonight bids farewell to the current partnership of veteran broadcast journalist Ed Lingao and News5’s Senate correspondent Meanne Los Baños-Oroceo.
This, as effective this Monday, August 3, Bok Ed will bring his nearly 40 years of experience to Frontline Sa Umaga, which currently airs as a segment of the network’s morning show, Gud Morning Kapatid.
It is his new assignment within the Kapatid network, as he also currently anchors the afternoon news program Storycon on One News and 105.9 True FM.
TV5 has since begun airing teasers about his move to the said newscast, which has seen multiple changes in format and set of anchors since it was first conceived in 2021.
Frontline Sa Umaga was first launched as a standalone 30-minute newscast at 6:00 am with former Kapatid anchor Paolo Bediones in May 2021, later being joined by Marga Vargas after it was transferred to late mornings in October of that same year.
In 2022, Gretchen Ho was tapped to become the sole anchor of the show and was accompanied by Jes Delos Santos, who made the move from Cignal TV’s One News, the following year.
It was in June 2023 when the first iteration ended as it was later absorbed into Gud Morning Kapatid as a news segment.
However, that would be reversed in 2024 when Jes Delos Santos, Ruth Cabal, and Andrei Felix teamed up for the revived version that aired as a separate pre-programming (at first) and later post-programming to GuMoKa — where the news segment became known Frontline Sa Umaga Express.
But in another twist, that setup ended soon afterwards and Gud Morning Kapatid was shifted to an earlier time of 5:30 am in October 2024.
It was only in mid-2025 when Frontline Sa Umaga was brought back as a segment after the morning show’s Pasada Balita branding was retired.
TV5’s Frontline Sa Umaga airs within the 5:30 to 8:00 am window every Monday to Friday.
Meanwhile, with Lingao’s move to mornings, Frontline Tonight will welcome a new anchor who will join Los Baños-Oroceo, who remains part of the newscast.
In a Facebook post, the Kapatid Senate reporter teased that the news personality is someone “known” by people, but she is keeping it a secret for now.
“May bago kaming makakasama sa (Frontline Tonight)! Sure kaming kilalang-kilala nyo pero secret pa kung sino! Sooo abangan sa Aug 3 sa (TV5, 10:15 PM)!”, post read.
This is the very first major anchor shake-up for Frontline Tonight, which remained as the most-stable news program of the network since it was introduced in September 2021.
Originally, it was only anchored by Bok Ed and Meanne. It later welcomed former beauty queen and TV host Jannie Alipo-on, who was formerly with Aksyon Sa Tanghali, in 2023 to serve as its showbiz news presenter.
Frontline Tonight gained prominence among viewers with its insights and analysis of the days news, with Ed presenting the News ExplainED segment that breaks down the biggest news stories of the day.
Currently, the late-evening newscast airs from 10:15 to 10:45 pm each weekday evening on TV5.
