It is finally heading to theaters this year.
In a post on social media, the team behind the film Edjop, which stars Elijah Canlas and Jodi Sta. Maria, announced that it will finally see the light of day.
“This September 16, we are excited to finally let you see what we’ve been fighting for,” the caption of its social media post read. “EDJOP is more than just a film. It’s proof of what can happen when people come together to tell a story they believe in.”
The group also noted that it has been “it has been a road and there is still a lot to do” and will kick off a campaign to opening day, as they “don’t have a playbook for this” and will, instead, be inventing one.
“We hope you’ll come along as we DIY the hell out of this campaign- one post, one conversation, one screening, one person at a time,” they continued. “Maybe we’ll change a few minds. Maybe we’ll get to be disruptive. Passion coded. EDJOP coded.”
In the same post, it was revealed that the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Philippines.
Rico Gonzales, who serves as WB’s Distribution Head in the country, noted: “Edjop is a film that needs to be experienced on the big screen.”
“It’s an extraordinary story of conviction, sacrifice and humanity, told with remarkable cinematic ambition,” he added.
Meanwhile, Scarlet Victoria Jopson, who is related to Edgar Jopson, the subject of this biopic, shared: “It’s an uphill climb, but the summit we’re reaching for will be worth it. We want this film to be seen by everyone, especially students and young people.”
As for Katski Flores, the director and writer of the film, “Both the film and how it was made is about what it costs to believe in something. Getting Edjop’s story onto screens nationwide, at this scale, has been five years of fighting for exactly this moment. We couldn’t have asked for a better champion than WB.”
The movie will tackle the life and struggle of Edgar Jopson, also known by his nickname Edjop, who was an activist during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in the late ’60s and ’70s.
As recalled by Benjamin Pimentel, the author behind ‘U.G.: An Underground Tale’, which was used as a reference for the said film, duirng the Manila International Book Fair 2025, Edjop got into the nerves of Marcos Sr. when the then-student leader asked the country’s former dictator to put into writing that he was not running for a third term when his supposed final one expired in 1973.
And as history unfolded, Martial Law was declared in September 1972 and the activist did not take it sitting down and went to the “underground” to continue his fight for the masses.
The journalist, who has already watched the still-unreleased film, lauded Canlas’ performance in the movie. He noted that while he did not meet Edjop in person, Elijah was able to satisfy the image that formed in the author’s mind after meeting the people in the late activist’s circle.
“Nakita ko doon sa performance ni Elijah that he (Edgar Jopson) came alive for me,” said Pimentel.
“Maraming maraming salamat, Sir Boying (Pimentel) for the kind words. Naririnig ko siya sa likod and kinikilig ako kasi ito po talagang librong ito ang ginamit kong “bibiliya” habang nagpe-prepare ako to portray Edgar Jopson,” Canlas told Pimentel at the event.
He also admitted that it was a daunting task for him to do the role, especially with the kind of life that the biopic’s subject lived.
