On Sunday, May 31, the 66th Palarong Pambansa officially ended its week-long events in Agusan del Sur.

In his speech, Education Secretary Sonny Angara lauded the province for setting a “new benchmark” in hosting the Palarong Pambansa.

He told that saying the province has shown how local governments can raise their standards through innovation, caring for athletes, and world-class facilities.

Dumating ang pagkakataon ng Agusan del Sur at hindi nila ito sinayang, mula sa goosebumps na Opening Salvo, hanggang sa pagbibigay atensyon at alaga sa humigit kumulang 16,000 delegado rito,” said Angara, noting the 33-year-long wait bid of the province to host the Palaro.

According to the Secretary, Agusan del Sur has also made many improvements to make the experience of the delegates, athletes, coaches, and officials attending this year’s national games more comfortable and meaningful.

These include air-conditioned billeting quarters, free transportation, environmental protection measures, programs showcasing the province’s culture and tourism, and the use of Datu Lipus Makapandong DO Plaza Sports Complex, which is one of the largest and most comprehensive sports complexes that has been home to the Palarong Pambansa.

Angara also noted that Agusan del Sur has proven that the Palarong Pambansa can continue to thrive, while remaining focused on its primary goal of shaping and supporting the next generation of Filipino athletes.

This year showed that sports competitions can be organized at a higher standard while keeping athletes at the center of every decision. Agusan del Sur has raised the bar for future hosts,” he said.

Aside from the successful hosting, Angara also highlighted the important reforms and changes implemented in the Palarong Pambansa 2026.

These include the official inclusion of weightlifting as a regular sport, more opportunities for women athletes, expansion of the para-games, and opening the competition to athletes from the National Training Pool and the National Developmental Pool.

He also highlighted the historic move to put para-athletes at the forefront of the opening parade, which he said symbolizes more inclusive and equal opportunities for all in the field of sports.

The National Capital Region (NCR) reigned supreme once again as the overall champion in the regular games, recording its 19th consecutive championship in the history of the Palarong Pambansa.

Meanwhile, Region IV-A (CALABARZON) came in second while Region XI (Davao Region) came in third place.

In the Para Games, Region VI (Western Visayas) was recognized as the top region.

In conjunction with the formal turnover of the Palarong Pambansa banner in Quezon City, which will host the next edition in 2027, Angara expressed confidence that the innovations and successes of Agusan del Sur will serve as inspiration and guidance for future hosts of the national games.
