Delivering a romantic-comedy twist to timeslip stories.
Last May 8, the new series My Royal Nemesis, which stars actress Lim Ji-yeon and actor Heo Nam-jun, made its premiere on streaming giant Netflix.
And just within a week, the platform reported that viewers are already responding to the chemistry between a Joseon villainess who tries to survive modern society and a chaebol heir, who may have finally met someone he can’t control.
This, as it surged to the Global No. 1 spot on Netflix in its first week, thanks to its story that blends rom-com, fish-out-of-water comedy, and the unruly clash between Joseon sensibilities and modern capitalism.
In the series, Lim Ji-yeon portrays Shin Seo-ri, who lived in the Joseon era as Kang Dan-sim. Viewers see her and modern-day host do effortless shifts between period drama intensity and offbeat comedy.
The role marks another standout performance for the actress, who became widely known for her turn as Park Yeon-jin in the equally hit series The Glory back in 2022.
Meanwhile, Heo Nam-jun takes on Cha Se-gye, who is described as a “cold and capable third-generation chaebol,” whose carefully controlled life begins to unravel after Seo-ri enters the picture.
“His curiosity about her — despite his constant attempts to resist her chaos — fuels much of the show’s comedic and romantic tension,” noted the streamer.
My Royal Nemesis drops new episodes every Friday and Saturday on the said streaming platform.
