It is a risk intelligence platform aimed at protecting students from the harm caused by disasters.
This week, the Department of Education launched Project LIGTAS+or Learning Institution Geohazard Tracking and Assessment for Safety.
Utilizing geospatial analytics, satellite imagery, and historical hazard data, the platform provides real-time and detailed risk profiles for each school.
It aims to help communities prepare in advance to avoid disruptions to learning, which often cause further hardship for disaster-affected families.
The platform’s features include interactive multi-hazard maps, school-level risk profiles, flood intelligence from satellite SAR data, earthquake impact assessments, volcanic activity monitoring, and AI-powered weather forecasts up to ten days out.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara told that the effectiveness of this system can be measured by the protection it provides to students, the reduction of classroom disruptions, and the more robust delivery of education.
“Education is the most reliable ladder out of poverty. When a disaster strikes, that ladder shouldn’t break,” he emphasized. “Through Project Ligtas+, we are fulfilling President Bongbong Marcos’ mandate to use innovation not just for safety, but for stability.”
“We are moving away from guesswork and toward a future where data ensures that no child’s education is washed away by a storm,” he added.
For school communities, this serves as an alternative to mass class suspensions, as Deped will be able to determine which specific schools in a locality are at risk and which are safe to remain open.
This level of certainty helps to avoid the widespread impact of disasters: when classes can resume safely, students are not delayed while parents continue to work for their livelihoods.
Project LIGTAS+ has also been designed to provide clearer reports on risks, so that officials can make decisions based on the actual situation in each area.
Students, meanwhile, will benefit from more stable class schedules and adequate guidance, while the platform monitors how disasters affect their academic progress.
Teachers and school staff will also have a safer environment due to early warnings against extreme heat and landslide threats before they worsen, noted the department.
Although still in the pilot implementation phase, Project Ligtas+ is already actively assisting in the DepEd’s disaster response and long-term safety planning.
The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) is already using the platform for its regular situational reports during disasters and is also being used in the M7X Ready School Program launched on April 30, 2026.
The platform is also designed to assist in long-term planning regarding school infrastructure and resource prioritization.
According to the DepEd Education Center for AI Research (ECAIR), Project LIGTAS+ provides field offices with timely and evidence-based information for faster disaster response.
By linking safety data to learning outcomes, DepEd is ensuring that the continuity of education becomes a reality in every classroom, regardless of its location.
