The said changes will take effect next school year, which will start in June.
On April 8, the Department of Education (DepEd) formally launched the series of nationwide orientation sessions for school leaders and teachers to guide them in the implementation of reforms in the learning system, including the transition to the three-term school calendar starting School Year 2026–2027.
Held at the Miriam College in Quezon City, education officials and stakeholders gathered to discuss reforms under the DepEd’s Learning Systems strand.
According to Angara, the purpose of the orientations is to provide clear guidance to schools and ensure that the transition to the new policies is smooth and supported.
He said, “Magiging matagumpay lamang ang mga repormang ito kung lubos na mauunawaan ng ating mga guro at school leaders kung paano ito ipatutupad sa aktuwal na sitwasyon. Sa pamamagitan ng mga orientation na ito, nais nating matiyak na handa at suportado ang ating mga paaralan para sa darating na school year.”
(“These reforms will only be successful if our teachers and school leaders fully understand how to implement them in the actual situation. Through these orientations, we want to ensure that our schools are prepared and supported for the upcoming school year.”)
Among the policies discussed were the reforms that are part of DepEd’s broader efforts to improve the quality of basic education, strengthen instructional planning, and better support schools in implementing the K to 12 curriculum.
Leading the list are three-term school calendar, as well as the revised guidelines on classroom assessment and grading system, and the strengthened Senior High School curriculum.
The flexible learning programs, learning continuity during emergencies, work immersion and off-campus learning for Senior High School students, and updated guidelines on lesson planning were also tackled.
As per the department, the orientations will be held across the country and will be brought to regional and division officials and school heads, who will then cascade the reforms to their respective schools.
Orientation sessions for master teachers and classroom teachers are scheduled for May, but the department said that teachers are not required to report for their 30-day break this month.
“These policies aim for a humane system for teachers, learners, families that protects the conditions for real learning to happen,” noted Assistant Secretary for Learning Systems Jerome Buenviaje.
