Seven tropical cyclone names from 2025 season decommissioned by PAGASA

On Thursday, March 18, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced the names that will be “decommissioned” or retired after their last usage in 2025.

Now out of the regular roster, which is used repeatedly every four years, are domestic tropical cyclone names of Crising, Emong, Mirasol, Nando, Opong, Tino, and Uwan.

The state weather bureau explained that for these domestic names to be removed from the roster, they must meet certain criteria that have been set by the agency.

Specifically, if its occurrence resulted in either the deaths of at least 300 individuals or damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and other assets amounting to at least PHP 1 billion based on official reports from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

Due to the exceptional magnitude and extent of the devastation they caused, these seven (7) tropical cyclones in 2025 have met the criteria for decommissioning,” noted PAGASA.

Citing official data from the OCD, these weather disturbances have cumulatively resulted in 373 fatalities, 680 injuries, and 132 missing individuals, while the combined cost of damage amounted to more than PHP 36 billion.

Meanwhile, to replace these names, PAGASA has also announced their replacements for the next usage of the roster, which will fall in the year 2029. These are Chico, Elias, Magyawan, Nilad, Omar, Tala, and Urbano.

Some of the decommissioned names over the years include Milenyo, Frank, Ondoy, Pablo, Sendong, and Yolanda, among others.
