Philippines, Malaysia reaffirm aviation partnership

Marking another milestone in the partnership of both countries.

Last March 4 and 5, the Philippines and Malaysia successfully concluded their two-day bilateral negotiation in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

The Philippine delegation was led by Transportation Undersecretary Jim Sydiongco, joined by Civil Aeronautics Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Deputy Director General for Administration Atty. Danjun Lucas and Civil Aeronautics Board Executive Director Atty. Carmelo Arcilla.

During which, the two marked a significant milestone in their aviation partnership by modernizing the 1978 Air Services Agreement to reflect contemporary travel realities—such as the revised airline designation rules under the Public Service Act.

Carriers are now recognized by their principal place of business rather than traditional ownership, allowing more airlines to operate routes between the two countries.

“This is expected to enhance competition, providing travelers with greater options and more competitive fares,” said the CAAP in its statement, adding that the deal also expands commercial cooperation by promoting joint ventures and codesharing to create a more seamless travel experience.

The renewed aviation partnership, it told, is also expected to drive tourism and economic growth while strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations

CAAP also emphasized that the modernization of bilateral air agreements enhances the Philippines’ competitiveness in the global aviation sector.
