On This Day: In 2021, GTV was launched as GMA’s secondary channel

Many changes have occurred since then.

Many changes have occurred since then.

Past midnight on February 22, 2021, a week shy of its 10th anniversary, the local version of GMA News TV signed off for the final time as a new era for the channel began by sunrise.

At around 5:30 am, the gradient purple color and the energetic vibe of the new Kapuso secondary channel, GTV, bursted into screens nationwide.

For its first program, a slightly revamped simulcast block of the morning primetime programs of AM radio station DZBB Super Radyo was seen under the title Dobol B TV.

Later that day, the usual format of GMA News TV largely continued, with the main focal point being the fantasy drama series The Lost Recipe, which starred Mikee Quintos and Kelvin Miranda, and served as the banner show during that era—despite having premiered under GNTV the month before the channel’s relaunch.

Also part of the channel’s offerings on its inaugural year were the variety show Flex, as well as the Kapuso debut of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).

However, holdovers from prior incarnations of the channel include the longest-running noontime newscast Balitanghali, which dates back to QTV in 2005, and the flagship newscast State of the Nation, which was then a part of the original line-up of shows produced for GMA News TV.

GTV also continued to air original lifestyle and public affairs shows like Pinas Sarap, Biyahe Ni Drew, iJuander, Good News, and Farm To Table,

Since then, the channel has seen its format drift from one side to the other, with periods seeing it relying heavily on movie blocks and even simulcasts of GMA shows.

In July 2023, meanwhile, it also played a huge part in local TV history when it became the first home of the ABS-CBN noontime variety program It’s Showtime inside the Kapuso network, following the end of its TV5 blocktime.

Although, following the shift of the main simulcast to the flagship GMA channel in April 2024, GTV dropped the program from its line-up by December that year.

In recent years, the format has largely gravitated towards simulcasting the NCAA—which is now primarily carried by the Heart of Asia channel—and 24 Oras, as well as repeats of GMA Prime series via a same-day “delayed telecast” basis, and reruns of old original drama series from the mother network.

From time-to-time, GTV is also utilized for the TV broadcasts of special coverages, such as during major weather disturbances, the passing of Pope Francis, and the election of the new Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, and the September 21 rallies in 2025, to name a few.

GTV traces its roots to the long list of former Kapuso secondary channels that have graced the airwaves since 1995, which began with Citynet channel 27.

After Citynet went off air, it became the Entertainment Music Channel (EMC) before GMA became the official local partner of Channel V Philippines from 1999 until 2001.

After a period of dormancy, QTV was born in 2005 as part of a channel leasing agreement with ZOE on Channel 11, with the brand running all the way through February 2011—when it was retooled as GMA News TV later that month.
