On Monday, January 2, National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) Chairperson Andoni Aboitiz presented the agency’s plans for a new Rizal Exhibition Hall before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Malacañang.
Based on the proposal, the Rizal Exhibition Hall will be constructed at the center of the NMP Complex in the City of Manila.
It will serve as the focal building for the three existing national museums, which combined, will form the largest integrated museum complex in Southeast Asia.
The first purpose-built exhibition museum building in the NMP Complex, which primarily revamped existing historic structures, is said to be designed in accordance with prevailing international museum standards.
As per Palace Press Officer Usec. Claire Castro, the new Rizal Exhibition Hall aims to show the public of Jose Rizal’s interest—such as in the fields of fine arts, anthropology, and natural sciences—through exhibitions, educational activities and public programs.
Notably, there will be an estimated 6,500 square meters minimum exhibition area and at least 2,000 sq.m. tall space—thereby increasing the exhibition space by at least 33 percent in the complex.
Moreover, the new exhibition hall is seen to boost the complex’s visitor capacity and will have three phases, which is targeted for completion within three years. The entire project cost is set at PHP2.7 billion.
Meanwhile, in commemoration of the 129th anniversary of Dr. Rizal’s martyrdom last December 30, the National Museum launched a digital exhibition featuring his ethnographic collection, his role as a scholar and mentor, and his life in Germany.
