The OG Kings of Asianovela are back.
On Saturday, July 12, fans of Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Ken Chu, and Vic Zhou—known as the F4 in the series ‘Meteor Garden’—were seen together anew for the first time in awhile.
The four stars were the featured artists for the last of the eight-night concert series of Taiwanese pop rock band Mayday in Taipei.
During the show, lead singer Ashin surprised the crowd by bringing out of the “time machine” the four heartthrobs who performed their own song, ‘Meteor Rain’.
Their participation in the Mayday concert marked their first actual performance on stage in over a decade, following their guest appearance at the Spring Festival special of Chinese network Jiangsu TV in 2013.
Although, seven years later, in 2020, Jerry, Ken, and Vic virtually appeared via pre-recorded performances at the ‘1001 Night Festival’ concert, with Vanness being the sole member performing live then.
The Saturday segment also builds up the excitement brought about by the news that came out last June, when it was reported that the four male leads are preparing for a major tour across Taiwan and China in 2026 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ‘Meteor Garden’ that premiered in 2001.
Based on the Japanese manga ‘Hana Yori Dango,’ the said drama series later aired in the Philippines in May 2003 and posted high viewership rating during its original run and, at one point, registered a lion’s 68% audience share.
Its fame led to a cultural phenomenon and the rise of Asianovela sub-genre in local television, which eventually ushered in imported drama serials from other Asian countries, mainly South Korea, China, and Japan.
Meanwhile, as a band, the four-man team was able to release the albums ‘Meteor Rain,’ ‘Fantasy 4ever,’ and ‘Waiting For You’ from their formation as F4 in 2001, the group’s renaming to JVKV due to a legal issue in 2007, and their eventual disbandment in 2009.
