The controversial pedestrian overpass has both been a landmark and a subject of ridicule among the public.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 4, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the demolition of the footbridge along EDSA-Kamuning.
The said structure, which has been touted as the ‘Mt. Kamuning’ due to its unconventional height, was opened to the public in 2018.
The said pedestrian overpass was constructed in such a way that it would be able to cross the MRT-3 tracks, which run directly below it.
According to Transport Secretary Vince Dizon, PBBM’s call for its destruction comes as it was deemed too steep and inaccessible for senior citizens and persons with disability.
He also added that part of the President’s instruction was to tear the controversial footbridge and build a “better one.”
In the same release, the DOTr revealed that Mt. Kamuning would be replaced by a lower footbridge with elevators and access to the nearby busway station in the area this year.
Aside from its infamy among the locals, the overpass was also criticized back in 2022 by Dutch Consul General in San Francisco, Dirk Janssen, triggering an international talk about it.
