On Thursday, May 22, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. made a stunning announcement after ordering all his cabinet members to tender their courtesy resignation immediately.
“It’s time to realign government with the people’s expectations,” adding that it is not “business as usual” for the administration in its current form.
“The people have spoken, and they expect results—not politics, not excuses. We hear them, and we will act,” he reflected on the result of the recent midterm elections, where only 6 out of his 11 endorsed candidates made it to the final cut.
Of which, the strongest showing for the ‘Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas’ was fourth place finish of Senator-elect Erwin Tulfo, who was trumped by the Duterte-aligned first and third places Bong Go and Bato dela Rosa, and comebacking genuime opposition Senator Bam Aquino.
“This is not about personalities—it’s about performance, alignment, and urgency,” the President added.
He likewise raised the stakes with a new marching order, telling, “Those who have delivered and continue to deliver will be recognized. But we cannot afford to be complacent. The time for comfort zones is over.”
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said that the request for courtesy resignations is “aimed at giving the President the elbow room to evaluate the performance of each department and determine who will continue to serve in line with his administration’s recalibrated priorities.”
This also marks a new phase in the Marcos, Jr. administration, which is now entering its last half and effectively, the start of the “legacy years.”
During which, the admin aims to be more focused and introduce a performance-driven approach.
“The President emphasized that while many have served with dedication and professionalism, the evolving needs of the country require a renewed alignment, faster execution, and a results-first mindset,” the PCO noted.
The office also likewise assured the public that hovernment services will remain uninterrupted during this transition.
At present, most of the cabinet members have either confirmed publicly or were already disclosed to have already filed their respective resignation letters amid the major reshuffle.
