As the local TV landscape continues to face heavy competition from digital platforms.
In its recent annual report, GMA Network, Inc. bared the household ratings and audience shares of the leading stations in the country, according to the survey conducted by Nielsen Philippines.
As expected, the Kapuso network maintained its supremacy in the free-to-air landscape, keeping a 42.8% audience share and 8.6% household rating nationwide.
This was a slight dip than GMA’s reported 45.2% audience share in 2023.
Channel 7 continued to dominate the screens in the afternoon block with drama serials like ‘Abot-Kamay Na Pangarap’ and ‘Lilet Matias: Attorney-at-Law,’ and the simulcast of ABS-CBN-produced ‘It’s Showtime’ at noon.
Coming in second place is its archrival TV5, which registered 15.5% stake in the audience pie and a 3.1% in terms of households that tuned.
The Kapatid network gained ground in 2024, as its figures were an uptick from the 15% share it logged the year prior.
The MVP-owned platform furthered its digital expansion around the country, with its primetime block bolstered by the strong performances of ABS-CBN Studios’ ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’ and its flagship newscast ‘Frontline Pilipinas’.
GMA’s secondary station GTV, meanwhile, finished third with a 9.7% portion of the audience rating and 1.9% of homes.
Like its parent, the youth-oriented Kapuso channel was down 0.8% from its 10.5% audience share in 2023.
Two noteworthy events for GTV was the carriage of ‘It’s Showtime’ on the mothership channel in April —which led to reduced reliance on the station by viewers of the show, and the end of the flagship afternoon newsmagazine ‘Dapat Alam Mo’ in October 2024.
The fourth spot went to the ABS-CBN-affiliated channel A2Z channel, owned by Zoe Broadcasting Network, Inc., that received a 5.9% audience share and 1.2% household rating.
The leased station remained steady for most the year, with the only major programming shift being the loss of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in the first quarter.
Although that allowed the channel to return full-time to the broadcast of ABS-CBN shows during late afternoon and the lucrative evening hours.
A surprise to the top 5 list is the newly-launched RPTV channel that only began operations in February 2024 through RPN-9 and TV5’s digital terrestrial frequencies.
The station, currently the home of the PBA and served as a major broadcaster during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in August, took a 3.4% audience share and 0.7% household rating.
The next few spots then respectively went to I Heart Movies, Kapamilya Channel, Heart of Asia, with a triple-tie between ALLTV, PTV, and the now-defunct Pinoy Hits.
