The riverside park has been extended anew.
On Thursday, February 27, President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. formally inaugurated the third phase of the Pasig River Esplanade project.
The said portion connects Fort Santiago to Plaza Mexico in Intramuros and the historic Manila Post Office, which creates about 2,000 square meters of open space by closing the previously divided Plaza Mexico road.
This involved the construction of an open activity area, an amphitheater, and ornamental landscaping.
The Maestranza boardwalk, which features a 16-meter wide and 240-meter-long walkway, was also added for pedestrians and cyclists along the riverbank.
“Our mission is simple but it is difficult: to bring back the river to its pristine state and make it a vibrant waterway once again for life, for culture, and for mobility,” said the President.
He also added that the esplanade will “…create a safer, more beautiful, and expansive area for public events, for gatherings, and for leisurely walks,” which he noted to be honoring the city’s past while also embracing progress.
PBBM was also joined in the event by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, whom he said, is overseeing the progress of the project.
It was in 2024 when the first two phases were opened by President Marcos, with Phase 1 being a 500-meter esplanade showcase area behind the Manila Central Post Office.
Phase 2, meanwhile, extended the esplanade showcase towards Plaza Mexico in Intramuros.
