Lawmakers have approved the measure to impeach the embattled politician.
During a plenary session on February 5, 2025, it was disclosed that 215 members of the House of Representatives voted to endorse a fourth impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
This number is more than the needed 102 votes or the third of 306 votes needed for the motion to be transmitted to the Senate.
The House Secretary General Reginald Velasco has since been ordered to transmit the article of impeachment to the upper chamber of the Congress “immediately.”
After that, multiple representatives have been appointed by their peers to join in the impeachment trial as prosecutors.
They are as follows: Rep. Gerville Luistro, Rep. Romeo Acop, Rep. Rodge Gutierrez, Rep. Joel Chua, Rep. Raul Angelo Bongalon, Rep. Loreto Acharon, Rep. Marcelino Libanan, Rep. Arnan Panaligan, Rep. Isabelle Maria Zamora, Rep. Lorenz Defensor, and Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores
The fourth impeachment case follows three previous suits calling for the removal of VP Duterte from public office, which were all filed back in December 2024.
The first case submitted by multiple personalities and endorsed by Rep. Percival Cendaña of Akbayan partylist, and dated December 2, 2024, was for the alleged misuse of Php 125 million confidential fund of the Office of the Vice President for the year 2022.
On December 4, 2024, a second complaint against Duterte for betrayal of public trust was filed by politicians of the Makabayan bloc.
A third suit was then pressed by socio-civic groups and members of the clergy on December 19, 2024.
A motion has since been put by Rep. Manuel Dalipe to include the earlier complaints to the House archives.
This development makes Sara Duterte the first-ever Vice President to be impeached by the House of Representative in history.
At present, no official statements have been released by the Office of the Vice President and Senate.
