Korean TV networks cancel year-end specials after JejuAir crash

No live specials will air this week.

No live specials will air this week.

Due to the tragic events involving the JejuAir flight 7C-2216 last Sunday, December 29, Korean broadcast networks pulled the plug on their supposed specials scheduled for this week.

The live broadcast of the MBC’s 2024 Drama Awards and Gayo Daejejeon music festival, set for Monday, December 30 and New Year’s Eve were axed. In lieu, these will be pre-recorded, with airing to be done at a later date.

KBS had also decided to pull their Drama Awards on Tuesday, December 31, and instead broadcast the event in its entirety eventually.

SBS has also removed the 2024 Entertainment Awards from their schedule, but have yet to decide whether they will air it in another format or will pre-record the special program.

These changes come as the South Korean government, led by Acting President Choi Sang Mok, declared a national week-long period of mourning until midnight of Saturday, January 4 due to the fatal JejuAir flight that claimed 179 lives in the town of Muan.
