The said document, which he signed on September 21, 1972, effectively placed the entire Philippines under martial law.
It saw the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus that led to the warrantless arrest of several individuals, including high-profile politicans and businessmen.
During this period, both chambers of Congress were also abolished.
While a total of 464 media outlets, such as television and radio stations, and newpapers, were ordered shut by the regime.
As of April 2024, the Philippine Commission on Good Governance (PCGG), an agency tasked to retrieve the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos, Sr. regime and their cronies, have recovered Php 280 billion-worth of assets.
