The American leader made the announcement on Sunday.
In another twist to the hotly contested elections in the United States this November, the incumbent President Joe Biden will no longer seek a re-election.
In a post, Biden said: “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Biden’s term will end in January 2025.
“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” the sitting US President added.
Moreover, he is also giving his “…full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
In a separate statement on her page, Vice Presidrnt Kamala Harris expressed her gratitude over Biden’s endorsement.
“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country.”
Harris adds that she is “honored to have the President’s endorsement” and that her intention now is to “earn and win this nomination” in the Democrat National Convention.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” the VP Harris ended her statement.
The upcoming 2024 elections was supposed to be a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, who Biden defeated in the November 2020 elections.
However, in recent weeks, there have been calls for Biden from within the Democratic party to step aside from the race, with many of them primarily concerned about his age and well-being.
