Israel shuts Al Jazeera operations, raids office

The Qatar-based news organization denounced the move.

The Qatar-based news organization denounced the move.

On Sunday, May 5, the Israeli cabinet moved to prohibit the local operations of news channel Al Jazeera.

This prevents the Qatari news channel from broadcasting, its reporters from gathering news, and uploading content on their official website in Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Al Jazeera an “incitement channel” when he announced his cabinet’s decision to suspend the channel’s operations there.

He also said that the action will be enforced while the war in Gaza is ongoing.

In line with the move, the Ministry of Communications of Israel seized equipment from the channel’s office in Jerusalem.

Cable and satellite television feeds of the channel have also displayed messages informing viewers about the channel’s blockage.

However, in a report by BBC News, it said that Al Jazeera remains partially accessible in the country through its official Facebook page.

In response, Al Jazeera through its official statement called the action as a “deceptive and slanderous move.”

“Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemns and denounces this criminal act that violates human rights and basic right to access of information. Al Jazeera affirms its right to continue to provide news and information to its global audience.”

They also added that “the network will pursue all available legal channels through international legal institutions in its quest to protect both its rights and journalists, as well as the public’s right to information.”

Launched in 1996, Al Jazeera Media Network says in its official page that it reaches more than 430 million people in more than 150 countries worldwide.
