The newscast was the final holdover from the Kapatid rebranding of the station in 2010.
On March 16, 2020, TV5 aired the final edition of ‘Aksyon,’ its flagship newscast of almost 10 years.
Original anchor Cheryl Cosim and her former ‘Aksyon Tonite’ co-anchor Ed Lingao were the last presenters of the news show.
The end of the program was both unceremonious and abrupt, as it was also the time when the entire Metro Manila was placed under ‘community quarantine’ due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the region.
The following day, on March 17, amidst stricter protocols, News5 unified all the resources of its news outlets One News and One PH with TV5 and began airing their news bulletins under the ‘One News Now’ brand.
In May 2020, TV5’s news department officially axed ‘Aksyon’ when it decided to resume its nightly newscast on the channel using the ‘One Balita Pilipinas’ brand from One PH, with both Cosim and Lingao hosting the interim primetime news show.
The set-up did not last long, as on October 5, 2020, TV5 launched its new flagship newscast ‘Frontline Pilipinas’ with Cheryl Cosim and now-Senator Raffy Tulfo.
HIGIT SA BALITA, AKSYON!
‘Aksyon’ originally aired as one of TV5’s offerings when it rebranded to the Kapatid network in April 2010.
The program’s original mission was to deliver “action journalism,” which aimed to solve or alleviate some problems of the country, while also reporting about them.
In 2011, the brand expanded upon the debut of news portal InterAksyon and the free TV news channel AksyonTV.
In 2014, it was expanded from a primetime newscast to TV5’s overarching brand for all its news offerings.
This gave birth to the morning show ‘Aksyon sa Umaga,’ midday edition ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali,’ and the late-night round-up ‘Aksyon Tonite.’
However, due to budget cuts in the station, ‘Aksyon sa Umaga’ was axed in November 2017, while ‘Aksyon Tonite’ ended in March 2019.
‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’ was retained, but was tweaked into a public service show of its anchor Raffy Tulfo, with news segments sprinkled across the show.
‘Aksyon’ primetime, meanwhile, was officially helmed by News5 chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes until the dawn of the COVID-19 outbreak in Luzon.
