Today is Ninoy Aquino Day.
On this day, in 1983, Senator Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino, Jr. was assassinated shortly after he had deplaned at then-Manila International Airport (MIA).
A known-critic of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., Aquino was shot dead upon his arrival after years of being in exile in the United States amidst the imposition of Martial rule in the Philippines.
His death is also regarded as a major catalyst in the ouster of former President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
Meanwhile, in 1987, the airport was renamed to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honor.
