MTRCB chair speaks up on ‘Showtime’ issue, parents’ controversial moment on ‘E.A.T.’
The chairman of the board has spoken up.
In a report by Bandera, it said that they have obtained a statement Lala Sotto, the chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) through her publicist. According to the report, the chairwoman said that there is no reason for her to call the attention of the TV5 noontime show ‘E.A.T.’ Lala also said that her parents have been “doing that for 44 years, but it had never been a problem.”
On the program ‘Cristy FerMinute,’ the chairwoman elaborated on that, stating that “E.A.T. is not deserving of a notice to appear.” She also said that, “nakasanayan (they are used to)” see their parents act sweet before them and on TV while they were growing up. “Malinaw na walang anumang hindi angkop na nangyari sa binanggit na kilos ng aking mga magulang sa programang E.A.T.,” chairwoman Sotto added.
Sotto’s statements come in response to the comments of many netizens online regarding the controversial “kissing” act of Tito Sotto and Helen Gamboa during the July 29 episode of ‘E.A.T.’. Sotto and Gamboa are the parents of the chairwoman.
The viral scene from the noontime show was brought up by users on social media after the MTRCB on Monday issued a “notice to appear and testify” to the producers of ‘It’s Showtime’ of ABS-CBN, which is a rival program of ‘E.A.T.’ According to the board, the Kapamilya noontime program violated the Presidential Decree 1986, which expounds on the rules and mandate of the MTRCB.
The alleged “violation” is said to have took place on the July 25 episode of ‘Showtime,’ where TV hosts and couple Vice Ganda and Ion Perez ate the icing from a cake during the ‘Isip Bata’ segment. The hearing was set after MTRCB said that it had received compaints from the public over the segment.
Back to her interview on ‘Cristy FerMinute,’ chairwoman Lala Sotto also explained their decision to call the ‘Showtime’ team. According to the MTRCB chair, the noontime show was flagged by both viewers and the agency’s Monitoring and Inspections Unit. Moreover, the alleged “violation” is on the program’s PG-rating classification, as the act was committed in front of kids “who were physically present.”
Sotto also believes that “the board has been very tolerant” to ‘Showtime,’ despite the board issuing multiple and repeated warnings to the program in the past. These vioations, she said, include “language” and a “nipslip incident.” To end, the MTRCB chair said that “hindi namin ‘to palalampasin. Magalit na kung sino ang magalit.” [“We will not let this one slip. Whoever gets mad, gets mad.”]
Maine Mendoza, Arjo Atayde call out publication’s story about their trip abroad
The newlywed couple expressed their disappointment over the story online.
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, August 2, actress Maine Mendoza called out news publication INQUIRER over the story regarding their trip abroad. According to INQUIRER, Mendoza and husband Rep. Arjo Atayde will fly to Europe for an “official trip as vice chairperson of the House special committee on creative industry and performing arts.”
Their destinations were also detailed as Greece, Italy, and Switzerland. In Switzerland, Atayde is said to be attending the 76th Locarno Film Festival for his film ‘Topakk’. INQUIRER also reported that Atayde was assigned by Congress to visit Filipinos in Greece and Italy. As such, he will reportedly be working remotely from August 5 to 27.
After the story was published, Maine took to X to express her reaction to the said story, which she deemed as “false and misleading.” The ‘E.A.T.’ host said that “Arjo’s will go to Locarno as his film is part of the Locarno film fest.” She added, that their trip afterwards will be from their personal expense.” Arjo also reacted, before they both eventually deleted their respective posts.
Later on, INQUIRER issued a follow-up to the said report, saying that they are standing by the story that they have published earlier. To which, Maine responded in another post.
The article is still misleading and lacking context. It insinuates that this trip is at government expense. There are two kinds of “official” travels and I hope you include that in your article and where this trip falls under. In their article, INQUIRER answered that “nowhere in our articles was it insinuated that government money was involved in their travel.” Furthermore, that their report was “based on the statement released by Atayde’s office to media.”
The House of Representatives later issued a clarification regarding the matter. According to Secretary General Reginald Velasco, the HOR has issued a “travel authority” to Rep. Atayde. They also confirmed that the actor-politician will not be using any sort of public funding for the trip.
Maine Mendoza and Arjo Atayde tied the knot in Baguio City last Friday, July 28.
Eric Nam arrives in Manila ahead of Saturday fanmeeting
He is in town for an event this weekend.
Korean-American singer Eric Nam is in Manila this week. Today, August 2, Nam appeared as the featured artist in GMA Network’s morning variety show ‘TikToclock’. There, he performed his single ‘House on a Hill’ for the first time on Philippine free-to-air television. After that, he went to the roadshow of FM station Wish 107.5 at Eastwood City in Libis, Quezon City.
On X (formerly Twitter), the singer-songwriter even gave a special shoutout to the traffic situation in Metro Manila. “manila your traffic is unmatched,” Nam said on his account. To date, the post has already been viewed more than a million times.
The reason Nam is here for his free fanmeeting event. It will be held at the Market Market! mall in Taguig City on Saturday, August 5, at 5:00 pm.
HORI7ON’s first concert in Manila after debut happens in September
It will serve as the group’s homecoming event.
In a poster reveal on Wednesday, August 2, all-Filipino male pop group HORI7ON announced that they are set to hold their first concert in Manila. Based on their album’s title ‘Friend-SHIP,’ the event will be held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on September 9, 2023. Ticketing details, as well as the seat plan, have all yet to be shared by the organizers.
HORI7ON consists of seven (7) members, namely Vinci, Kim, Kyler, Reyster, Winston, Jeromy, and Marcus. The group recently made their debut in South Korea with their first album, with the title track ‘SIX7EEN’. The official music video for ‘SIX7EEN’ has since garnered more than 5 million views on YouTube.
They also made history as they are the first all-Filipino male group to stage their debut performances in all seven Korean music shows, led by the likes of ‘M Countdown,’ ‘Music Bank,’ ‘Music Core,’ and ‘Inkigayo’.
HORI7ON is the product group of ABS-CBN and MLD Entertainment’s survival show ‘Dream Maker’. All the members were selected from the 62 participants when the show first aired in November 2022.
