Albay now under ‘state of calamity’ due to Mayon’s unrest

The provincial government has made the declaration.

(JUNE 9, 2023) – The provincial government of Albay has placed the entire province under state of calamity.

This was declared after local seismology and volcanology bureau PHIVOLCS raised Alert Level 3 over Mayon Volcano on Thursday.

The said alert level was heightened from level 2, as Mayon exhbited “a magmatic eruption of the summit lava dome,” which triggered rockfall events and volcanic earthquakes in recent days.

PHIVOLCS has also recommended the evacuation of residents within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
