Fire razes historic Manila Central Post Office building
Late Sunday evening, sirens from fire trucks hounded the area near the Manila Central Post Office in Ermita, Manila as a fire hit the historic building. Initially, the fire only affected the basement level, where PhilPost said a museum, some offices, and storage areas are located. Parcels and letters were located in the upper floors.
However, at around half past 4 in the morning, the situation worsened, with the fire creeping up to the upper floors. Soon, the entire building was affected.
PhilPost’s early estimates suggest that the damages are worth Php 300 million. Apart from letters and parcels, artifacts of significant historical importance were also lost to the fire, such as paintings, memorabilia, and historic stamps. National ID cards of residents in the City of Manila were also among the items engulfed in the fire.
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuña has also assured that the local government unit, as well as other authorities, will restore the Post Office building. She also added that “no other building will stand on its place.”
Temporarily, PhilPost employees will be working in a site in Del Pan, Manila, among other buildings in the surrounding area identified as satellite office for the time being.
The landmark building was built in 1926 and was designed by Architect Juan Arellano. During World War II, American forces burnt down the building to expel Japanese forces from the site. After the war, the Manila Post Office was rebuilt and was completed in 1948.
‘Mawar’ to enter PAR this weekend
According to the forecast of PAGASA, the tropical cyclone named ‘Mawar,’ which was last classified to be a Typhoon, will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this Friday or Saturday. Once it enters PAR, it will be named ‘Betty.’ By that time, it is feared to have intensified to a ‘Super Typhoon.’
Current forecasts estimate that the Typhoon might affect areas in Northern Luzon, such as the Batanes and Babuyan island groups. It is also feared that the Southwest Monsoon, known locally as ‘Hanging Habagat,’ will be pulled by the Typhoon and in effect will affect more areas in the country.
The last known location of Typhoon Mawar as of 4:00 pm on May 22, was at 2,275 km East of Mindanao. It packs winds of up to 140 kph, with gustiness of 170 kph. No Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal have been raised in the Philippines yet due to ‘Mawar.’
‘Frontline Pilipinas’ moves back to 6:30; faces ’24 Oras’ and ‘TV Patrol’ head-on
On Monday, May 22, TV5’s flagship newscast ‘Frontline Pilipinas’ moved back to the prime 6:30 pm slot on the Kapatid network. This, as FP also relaunches with a new look, with a predominantly orange theme, dropping the blue color that has been present since the newscast’s launch in 2020. Apart from that, the show also updated its opening billboard sequence and lower-third graphics.
When it launched in 2020, ‘Frontline Pilipinas’ was assigned at the 6:30 pm slot. However, a few months late, it was moved to 6:00, then 5:30 pm — where it settled for more than two years.
In spite of the relaunch, Cheryl Cosim and Julius Babao remain as the newscast’s main anchors. They also kept 90 minute-long runtime, which was first introduced during non-PBA broadcast days in December 2022.

Phillip Schofield leaves UK show ‘This Morning’
In the United Kingdom, popular TV presenter Phillip Schofield has “stepped down with immediate effect” from ITV’s ‘This Morning.’ He was the show’s longest-serving presenter, clocking in a 21-year-long association with the program.
His now-former partner in the program Holly Willoughby thanked him in a post on Instagram. She is going to stay in the show. A new permanent on-screen partner has yet to be named. Currently though, Holly is on a break until June.
Schofield’s resignation from the program comes in the midst of multiple controversies, such as his brother’s case and a rumored falling out with Willoughby — an allegation that he has denied in recent days.
During the Monday episode of the program, hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary paid tribute to Schofield’s contribution in the show. ‘This Morning’ home network ITV, meanwhile, also gave thanks to Schofield and confirmed that he will remain part of the channel for other projects.
