The tropical country has a representative for the upcoming Winter games!
On February 4, 2022, the Winter Olympic games in Beijing, China will officially commence. The winter games — which is also the 24th in history — will be historic for two reasons. One is the fact that this would be the first time that it will be set in a city that had also hosted a Summer Olympic game (Beijing 2008).
As for the Philippines, it will be the first time that the country has appeared at the Winter Olympics for three consecutive games, a streak that began in 2014 with Michael Martinez’s Olympic figure skating debut. Prior to that, PH had no representative for all other games, but 1972, 1988, and 1992.
This time around, the country’s flag will be raised by Asa Miller.
The 21-year-old athlete first competed in the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018. There, he formed the two man Philippine Olympic contingent — alongside Michael Martinez. Asa finished 70th overall at the men’s slalom event of the games.
For the 2022 games, Miller will be representing PH at the men’s slalom and men’s giant slalom competitions. Asa will also be the first Filipino alpine skier to compete twice at the Winter Olympic games.
The two events are expected to take place between February 13 and 16, 2022.
Just a few days back, Miller was approved of a funding that amounted to about Php 3.3 million by the Philippine Sports Commission.
As for the official broadcast of these games, Cignal TV and TV5 have obtained the rights to air the 2022 Beijing games in the Philippines. The time table/schedule for the whole duration is expected to be revealed a few dates closer to the start of the Olympiad.
